Reflection Paper-3

The last 3 weeks of my Community Service at Anacev Anaokulu was busy with the preparations of their End of the Year Performance. One time the teachers was re-shaping and re-organizing their classroom and yearly works and they asked me to help them with some filing and re-shaping the classroom. So that week I was mostly busy with those activities. The last week of my service was mostly about practicing their performances such as ballet and singing and dancing. I had one last lunch with the children and the teachers and said goodbye to all of them. Some children were so cute that they asked me if I was not coming back again to play with them. It was hard in a way to say good-bye to them.

Reflection Paper 2

After I went to ANACEV for a couple of weeks I got to know the children better and got closer with them. They started to call me ‘Teacher’ too, and they were interested to get to know me. The teachers of the classroom were very nice and continued to be welcoming. Their Friday morning schedule was same every week, so my Friday mornings with them were more or less same every time I went there. When I started, the teachers told me that Fridays were their free days. It was the day that children spend their time with unscheduled free activities except for ballet and English classes.

The teachers and the children were preparing for the End of the Year Performance when I was going there. They were preparing different kinds of art projects, a ballet show, and two English songs for this performance. I offered the teachers that I could help them with the songs. They asked me to transcribe the songs first and help the children to practice the songs as well. The song that I helped the children to practice was about the body parts which was called “Hands, Knees, and Toes, Knees and Toes.” The children loved the song and were very good at practicing it. So whenever we had the suitable times one of my tasks at Anacev was to help the kids to practice for their End of the Year Performance.

I also enjoyed reading them books during their free reading times. The children sometimes asked me to read them their books and they loved it when I read to them.

Reflection Paper 1

I’ve done and completed my Community Service at ANACEV Anaokulu. I went there for 7 weeks on Fridays from 8am until 12pm. I worked with 5 year olds, and the teachers in my classroom were Rukiye and Sirin Hoca. They were very nice and welcoming, and I enjoyed being in their classroom for 7 weeks. The principle of the school was Nurdan Hoca, although she seemed strict, in general she was nice, welcoming and helpful too. There were 31 students in my classroom, it was a crowded and busy group.
They had the same schedule every week on Friday mornings that I spent there for 7 weeks. They started their day with their free time to read and share their books that they brought from home. While they were reading their books the teachers were generally keeping up with paper work or some classroom projects. At 9am it was breakfast time and after washing their hands they got into line and head for the cafeteria. I generally helped by serving their water or milk and had breakfast with them. After breakfast we head back to the classroom and it was time for the girls ballet class. During the preparation for their class I generally helped them to get dressed and I joined them at their ballet lessons. It was very enjoyable and entertaining to watch the girls dancing and also observing their progress throughout the seven weeks. The ballet lesson took generally 20 minutes and during that time the boys are left back in their classroom having free time with their choice of toys. After the ballet lesson the girls go back to their classroom, get dressed back to their daily clothes.
After the ballet class it is time for their English lesson. The classroom gets organized for the English teacher and students sit down on their chairs and wait for their teacher. During this period I generally helped the students to get organized and ready. The English class takes about 30 minutes and after it is finished the students head to the cafeteria to have their lunch. I generally had lunch with them and get finished with my task after the lunch.

Students are improving their imagination by creating stories out of pictures in the books.
